The best time to fish Darwin is the run-off (March to May) for barramundi and the dry season (May to October) for offshore and reef fishing. The build-up (October to December) fires for Spanish mackerel and sailfish. Thanks to the tropical climate, Darwin fishes productively all year — the season simply decides which species you target.
Darwin doesn't have spring, summer, autumn and winter. It has two seasons — the wet and the dry — and the transitions between them. Each one switches a different fishery on. Here's how the year unfolds and what to chase when.
The Run-Off (March to May): Barramundi Prime Time
As the wet-season rains ease, floodplain water drains back into the creeks and rivers. This is the run-off, and it is the single best window for barramundi in the Top End. Bait gets flushed out on the falling tide and barra stack up at creek mouths and drains to feed. If a metre-plus metery is your goal, this is when to book a barra charter.
The Dry Season (May to October): Reef & Offshore
The dry brings clear skies, light winds and settled seas — perfect for running wide. This is the prime window for Timor Sea reef fishing, with red emperor and coral trout on the chew, and the best time for comfortable offshore days. Spanish mackerel also run hard through these months. Barra keep biting in the harbour and on rock bars too.
The Build-Up (October to December): Pelagic Heat
Before the wet returns, the build-up brings heat, humidity and hungry fish. Sailfish move onto the offshore grounds, mackerel fire, and barra switch on again for a second run. The Blue Water Pelagic Run is at its best around now.
The Wet (December to March): Sailfish & Solitude
Monsoon rains arrive, but between storms the fishing can be electric. Sailfish numbers peak, the rivers come alive, and there are fewer boats on the water. Trips depend on weather windows, but a good wet-season day is hard to beat.

Own a charter business and want a website like this?
Most charter sites are built once and forgotten. They look okay but they don’t rank on Google, they’re invisible to AI search, and they can’t close the deal when an angler lands on them.
This site is built differently. Every page targets what anglers actually search for. The trip pages, the species guides, the seasonal calendar. All of it is set up so Google and AI engines like ChatGPT understand exactly what you offer and where you operate.
The result is anglers finding you first and booking direct. No commissions to FishingBooker. No 20-30% to Airbnb Experiences. Just direct bookings through a site that works.
Blue Water Digital builds these sites for charter operators worldwide. We’re one of Australia’s founding Google Partners with 20 years in digital, and we only work with fishing charter businesses.
