What Fish Can You Catch in Darwin?

From iconic barramundi to high-speed sailfish and brutal giant trevally — here's the full lineup of what swims in Top End waters.

In Darwin and the Top End you can catch barramundi, mangrove jack, queenfish and golden snapper inshore, sailfish, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, yellowfin tuna and giant trevally offshore, and red emperor, coral trout and nannygai on the reef. This diversity, fishable year-round, is what makes the Top End one of Australia's standout fisheries.

Few destinations let you catch this range of fish from one port. Here's the rundown, grouped by where you'll find them.

Inshore & Estuary Species

  • Barramundi — the Top End icon, best on the run-off
  • Mangrove jack — hard-hitting red devils of the snags
  • Queenfish — acrobatic speedsters that smash surface lures
  • Golden snapper (fingermark) — quality eating around structure
  • Threadfin salmon & mud crab — harbour and creek bonuses

These are the target of our Barra & Saltwater Flats trip.

Offshore Pelagic Species

  • Sailfish — the fastest fish in the sea, tag and release
  • Spanish mackerel — blistering runs and superb eating
  • Wahoo — missiles of the current lines
  • Yellowfin tuna — powerful, dogged and great on the plate
  • Giant trevally — the ultimate popper target

Chase these on the Blue Water Pelagic Run.

Reef & Bottom Species

  • Red emperor — the king of Top End reef table fish
  • Coral trout — stunning and superb eating
  • Nannygai (saddletail snapper) — reliable, quality fillets
  • Giant trevally — turns up to crash the reef session

Target these on the Timor Sea Reef Explorer.

Which Fish Should You Target?

It comes down to two things: the season and what kind of day you want. Chasing a trophy on lures? Barra in the run-off. After a feed of premium fillets? Reef fishing in the dry. Want screaming runs and aerial spectacle? Pelagics in the build-up. Read our best time to fish Darwin guide to line up your trip with the right season.

For Charter Operators

Own a charter business and want a website like this?

Most charter sites are built once and forgotten. They look okay but they don’t rank on Google, they’re invisible to AI search, and they can’t close the deal when an angler lands on them.

This site is built differently. Every page targets what anglers actually search for. The trip pages, the species guides, the seasonal calendar. All of it is set up so Google and AI engines like ChatGPT understand exactly what you offer and where you operate.

The result is anglers finding you first and booking direct. No commissions to FishingBooker. No 20-30% to Airbnb Experiences. Just direct bookings through a site that works.

Blue Water Digital builds these sites for charter operators worldwide. We’re one of Australia’s founding Google Partners with 20 years in digital, and we only work with fishing charter businesses.
